VIGIL & MARCH for Joseph Ileto

The Pilipino community along with the Asian Pacific American Legal Center as well as various Asian community based organizations will be holding a Community Vigil & Memorial for Joseph Ileto on Saturday August 28, 1999. As many of you already know, Joseph's life was tragically cut short when he was shot to death by William Buford on August 9, 1999, simply because he was Pinoy.

Joseph's family will be participating in the Vigil and March which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Pilipino American Mural on 1664 W. Beverly Blvd. (b/Bonnie Brae and Union). An estimated 300-500 people are expected to participate. The march will then go through Pilipinotown to St. Columban's Catholic Church approximately 3 blocks away. A memorial service along with testimonials from family supporters, postal co-workers and friends will then take place at the church at 6:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., a rally with key Civil Rights Leaders and Candlelight Vigil will then occur across the street at Belmont High School where Attorney General Janet Reno & Jesse Jackson are expected to speak along with elected officials and leaders from the Pilipino community.

I am encouraging all of you to attend not only on behalf of PABA and to oppose all acts of bigotry but more deeply to show our support to the Ileto family who have stood almost alone, albeit together, in the face of such an indescribable tragedy. I ask that you bring your own family and friends to participate in this March. (We will be walking together as a group with our PABA Banner so look for our members at 5:30 at the start of the March.) As an example of the family's resolve despite this tragedy, it has invoke the Pilipino spirit of "Bayanihan" to teach the nation to reach outside of oneself but rather across to your neighbors as well as give to others as you would to your own. As an additional theme, the family has developed the phrase "Join Our Struggle Educate to Prevent Hate" "Instill Love, Equality Tolerance To Others" All of the first letters representing Joseph Ileto's name.

PABA has been asked to help provide pro bono legal services to the family and our own Maria Lim has agreed to help. She will be assisting the family with probate, trust and tax issues especially with the recent establishment of the Joseph Ileto foundation. If you would like to personally contribute to the foundation call the Washington Mutual Branch in Monterey Park. Many thanks should also go out to Paul and Rachel Estuar who have served as intermediaries to the public for the family.

I hope to see you all there.
Greg Santiago, President-Elect, PABA
